Just for Karate Parents

Grading System

Dear Parents,

Karate for Kids classes are designed to be fun and provide several important developmental benefits. In Japan these benefits are generally categorized as chiiku (mental development), tokuiku (moral development) and taiiku (physical development).

Chiiku (mental development), karate helps kids build concentration, focus, clear thinking and decisiveness.

Tokuiku (moral development) karate helps instill patience, discipline, perseverance, and understanding in kids. It builds confidence, develops self-control and increases calmness, courtesy and peace—all of which will helps in all day-to-day activities in their lives.

Taiiku (physical development) karate is good for the body! Physically it is excellent for the heart, builds strong bones and bigger muscles, creates resilience, and makes the body less susceptible to sickness and injury.

In all these ways, karate is profoundly helpful to kids in dealing with the many challenges facing them in today's society. It brings them balance and perspective at an age when these are needed most.

Japanese Terms in Karate

Kids in Karate learn to understand, and speak several Japanese terms over the course of their training. It is helpful for them to practice these terms at home.

Self-Defense Classes

Self-defense is about using your smarts first and avoiding potentially unsafe situations. However, if a person blocks your path to safety or physically attacks you, your only recourse may be to fight back. The best way to prepare yourself to fight off an attacker is to take a self-defense class. A good self-defense class can teach you how to size up a situation and decide what you should do. Self-defense classes can also teach special techniques for breaking an attacker's grasp and other things you can do to get away.

One of the best things people take away from self-defense classes is self-confidence. The last thing you want to be thinking about during an attack is, "Can I really pull this self-defense tactic off?" It's much easier to take action in an emergency if you've already had a few dry runs.

A self-defense class should give you a chance to practice your moves. If you take a class with a friend, you can continue practicing on each other to keep the moves fresh in your mind long after the class is over.

Central Edmonton Karate-Do offer 6 week Self-Defense sessions. Please advise Sensei Annette if you are interested and to learn details.
